Backup iPhone

Well you are here because you have asked yourself the question so many other iPhone users have which is how to:

Backup iPhone

Having a backup of your Apple device is helpful. It keeps all downloads, contact information, photos, messages, call log and more. It is always advisable to make a backup of your data on the Cloud or a PC. You can use them later if you have to move them to a new device or to the same device after a restore.

Obviously some of these steps are going to be unnecessary for certain users, so just skip the steps that do not apply to you.  You will know which do or do not apply.

  1. Install Apple iTunes onto your computer.
  2. Create an Apple ID.
  3. Open Apple iTunes software on your computer or laptop, and sign in with your Apple ID.
  4. Power On your iPhone device and connect to your computer running iTunes using the appropriate Apple Cord.
  5. Locate your device Icon in iTunes on the left menu and click on it.
PC Users Press (CTRL + S), Mac Users (CTRL + RIGHT CLICK) to toggle the side bar.
  6. You should now see information about your iPhone and a Backups box right beneath it.
  7. Choose how you want to back up your data.  You have two options.
#1 – Backup to your computer.
#2 – Backup to iCloud.  You are only allowed to back up 5 GB’s worth of data for free.  Anything over that amount will cost you money to increase your storage size.
  8. Hit the Back Up Now button.

On top of iTunes, you will see the progress of the operation. You must wait a few minutes for it to be ready. When iTunes is finished, the bar will fill and then disappear. That means the backup process is over.

To verify that the backup was done correctly, in the menu bar, click on “iTunes”, then “Preferences” and you will see your devices name next to the time the backup was created. If you have made the backup more than once, it will be differentiated by date. If you have multiple backups of different gadgets, you can recognize them by name.

Now for many people, iTunes can be a very tricky way to back up your data. It’s the worst part about Apple’s suite of product. However, there is an extremely great alternative!

  1. my iphone is due to go in for repair, by syncing my phone to my computer will this
    •save all my contacts
    •save all my txts/emails
    •apps etc

basically when apple send my iphone back i assume they
will reset it, when i sync it after the repair will everything i
have now on my iphone still be here?

    • It will sync those items if you have it set to do that. When you open iTunes, you can click on your device, and then check off the idividual settings of what you want to update in your sync.

    • Hi

  3. I went through all of these steps however on my laptop the “back up now” button is grey so i am unable to select it for either iCloud or to my computer which i would rather.

  4. I have 8.1.3 on my iPhone. It has not backup since November. ITunes is not an option. I bought extra cloud storage. Your instructions do not help since there IS NO “Backup Now” under iCloud to tap. There is “storage” and then “Manage storage” but never a “Backup Now” button or link to start a backup. I have nearly 25GB of storage available in iCloud. My iPad works just fine. I have powered off the iPhone. I have even deleted the last backup as suggested. Please DO NOT tell me to do the simple things like “Is WIFI connected” Both my idevices are using my WIFI just fine. The iPhone is locked and charged every night while connected to WIFI. Where is the stupid manual “Backup Now” button?

  5. I need to back up an iPhone 4 on a friends computer as my own iTunes is out of date .
He is reluctant because he is afraid that the information from the phone esp contacts wil get mixed up with his on his computer.
Is this the case ? Or are they stored seperately and can easily be removed ?
